Background: Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) amongst Australian Defence Force (ADF) members, veterans and first responders is higher when compared to general population. Townsville Private Clinic has developed an approach to the treatment of PTSD. The Trauma Recovery Program (TRP), is a 10 week outpatient program. Empirically validated treatments intended to promote recovery form the basis of the program. Group interventions include psycho-education, symptom management and skills training; participants also engage in 8-12 individual therapy sessions.
To maximise post-traumatic growth, we have introduced strategies to assist in exceeding patients pre-trauma baseline, including the PERMA model of wellbeing. For example, participants complete the VIA character strengths survey with results linked to identity; meaning and symptomatology. Engagement with local community groups fosters social connections and identification of purpose (eg: Mates 4 Mates; Hounds for Healing). Partners are included in sessions, including ‘love languages’ assisting in strengthening relationships.
Aims/objectives: This presentation will assist clinicians to consider the inclusion of posttraumatic growth strategies and steps available to implement this when working with individuals (and groups) for the purposes of treating PTSD.
Learning outcomes: Increased knowledge of how to include wellness strategies in PTSD treatment programs, utilising the PERMAH model as a framework.
