In this section of the symposium Dr Gordon Spence discuss his perspectives on evidence-based coaching as an applied positive psychology. Gordon's primary research interests include coaching, the facilitation of optimal performance, the integration and utility of mindfulness within coaching interventions, the advantages and limitations of using adult development frameworks in coaching practice, as well as issues related to employee engagement and workplace wellbeing. Of great relevance for this symposium is Gordon’s work on how coaching impacts performance and wellbeing via the satisfaction of psychological needs. In this regard Gordon's research, teaching and practice is informed by self-determination theory and other relevant theoretical frameworks. Gordon will outline his substantive body of coaching and well-being research and will demonstrate how the findings from the Australian context have significant implication for coaching practice globally. The emphasis here is on drawing explicit links between Australian research and global coaching practice.
