Gioia Chilton
Gioia Chilton, Ph.D., ATR-BC, LCPAT, CSAC is a licensed, registered and board certified art therapist who is a national expert in art therapy and positive psychology and arts-based research methods. Gioia is the co-author of the book, Positive Art Therapy Theory, and Practice: Integrating Positive Psychology with Art Therapy. published by Routledge in 2018 and has written numerous academic articles and book chapters. As an art therapist, she has worked with children, adolescents, and adults with mental health needs and taught art therapy at undergraduate, graduate and doctoral levels. She holds licenses as a Clinical Professional Art Therapist (LCPAT) in Maryland and Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) in Virginia, USA. Gioia was a Provost Fellow at Drexel University’s Creative Arts Therapies Ph.D. Program where she completed a dissertation titled, An Arts-Based Study of the Dynamics of Expressing Positive Emotions within the Intersubjective Art Making Process. She has been honored by the American Creativity Association's Research Award, the Potomac Art Therapy Association’s Professional Scholarship and Distinguished Service Awards and the Sylvia Shaw Judson Sojourner Award for artists concerned with social justice. Professional interests also include arts-based clinical supervision.
