There is increasing interest amongst clinicians, counsellors, coaches and practitioners in the integration of positive psychology interventions (e.g., mindfulness, gratitude) with broader psychological or behaviour change interventions (e.g., cognitive therapy, narrative approaches). In a recent paper in Clinical Applications of Positive Psychology: An International Perspective (titled, ‘Intentional practice: A positive psychology intervention planning and implementation method’), the author argued that integration should be underpinned by robust assessment, case formulation and intervention planning. This paper describes a case planning and implementation method (titled intentional practice) that has been developed with reference to the positive psychology and implementation science literature. The approach and modelling (Life Buoyancy Model) is a process driven method that enables flexible and integrative intervention planning. The modelling has been applied to design and implement large scale positive psychology interventions delivered across multiple sites, for heterogeneous cohorts and alongside clinical and non-clinical interventions. The methodology enables clinicians, counsellors and practitioners to draw upon a range of intervention components (e.g., PPIs, trauma-informed practice) and bring creative flair to their work, but within a framework of intentionality, evidence and mindful awareness. The presentation will introduce the approach and its utility within intervention planning. An example intervention plan will be provided.
