This presentation outlines the development of The Reading WELL [Wellbeing Everyday through Learning and Literature] optimized home reading program. Using a salutogenic health promotion approach (Antonovsky, 1996 and Lindstrom, 2010) and literacy taxonomy adapted from The ORIM Framework (Hannon and Nutbrown, 1997) and the Four Resources Model (Luke 1995 and Ludwig, 2003). The Reading WELL aims to improve child wellbeing through shared reading and discussion using developmental bibliotherapy (Frogan 2000 and Moulton, Heath, Prater, Dyches, 2011) as they interact with a parent after reading specifically selected picture books that consider wellbeing topics resilience, body image and self-esteem with using supported prompts and responses. The Reading WELL home reading program aligns within existing home school routines to strengthen the home school partnership through meaningful discourse and guided discussion.
