The Importance Of Training Teachers In Positive Education (#756)

In general, teachers are currently not trained in the science of wellbeing, and therefore sometimes a lack of knowledge coupled with a lack of confidence can hold teachers back from successfully teaching and role-modelling wellbeing to their students.  It is also well understood that the teacher-student relationship is critical to student learning, and this is particularly evident when it comes to teaching the skills and knowledge of wellbeing, often referred to as Positive Education.

The teacher training delivered by Geelong Grammar School’s Institute of Positive Education is designed for the teacher to learn about the science of wellbeing from a personal perspective and consider how each of the elements are relevant to both their personal and professional lives.  The hope is that by the end of the training, the teacher will have felt was Positive Education is like, and that the concept of inspiring wellbeing in others becomes a heartfelt action rather than just a theoretical exercise.

This presentation will explore: How we can kindle curiosity in teachers regarding wellbeing; How we can help teachers to model vulnerability; and How we can inspire teachers to tailor concepts and activities to the needs of their students and their unique contexts.
