Industries like steel, coal, oil have clear-cut distinctions in work profile of the services segment and the manufacturing segments. In this research impact of life-orientation (life orientations are the general orientations in one’s life Pareek (1997))of an employee on his work area is studied in terms of job involvement, productive output, happiness and mental well being and across genders.
In pre-tests, two dimensions of life-orientation(L.O) enfolding and enlarging were found to be significant contributor in the elicitation process of job-involvement(J.I) in an employee. Positive correlation was found between the J.I of enfolders in the service segment and enlargers in the production or manufacturing segments. J.I of enlargers in service segment and enfolders in manufacturing segments was found to be negatively correlated.
Post-tests after a gap of 4 years were done on employees with inter-segmental transfers (services to manufacturing and vice-versa).
Amazing results surfaced highlighting facts that placement policies by the human-resource department should incorporate the testing of L.O of fresh recruits before allocating departments. Personal interviews unearthed that suitable work profile according to the L.O facilitates a healthy frame of mind and happiness.
Gender played an important variable in the happiness level and J.I when compared to work profile.
