Background: The concept of mattering is an underdeveloped, yet important component of an employee’s success in the workplace, and personal well-being. Deficit-based leadership strategies employed by many organizations can break-down the ability for an employee to feel that they and their work matter, however, the focus by leaders on the various components of mattering can increase the psychological health, self-esteem and self-efficacy of employees, thus improving increasing work effectiveness and performance.
Discussion: This presentation will cover a customized definition of mattering created by combining components of mattering proposed by various researchers using a 30 year literature review. A customized and expanded use of the ATC Method is utilized to coach employees through the mattering thinking traps that have become obstacles to their success.
