Jo is a smart-journaling application that allows users to enjoy the insights of Positive Psychology in the context of their own lives. Users log their important moments via short texts (e.g., “Had great dinner with my parents”, “ Enjoyed a 5 mile run around the lake”) and with attached photos.

Jo analyzes these moments and provides services that help users take action towards increased wellbeing. First, Jo uses Artificial Intelligence technology to annotate each moment with a set of values (e.g., family, socialization, mindfulness, compassion for others), thereby letting the user track whether they are satisfying their needs w.r.t these values. For quantifiable activities (e.g., running, meditating) Jo extracts its duration and keeps a log for the user. Second, Jo provides reminders that let the users enjoy more happy moments. For example, if the user reports a good social interaction with a friend, Jo will ask if they want to create a reminder to meet with that friend again. Over time, Jo will ‘learn’ to give more insights and suggestions on how the user can spend their time to increase their well-being.

We will report on our experiences from fielding Jo in a few experimental settings.
